# TopstepX Rules 2026: Payouts, Drawdown & Automation

If you’re trading TopstepX or thinking about starting a Combine, three things decide whether the account survives and pays out: how the drawdown floor moves, how the payout split actually works, and whether your automation setup is even allowed. Get any one of those wrong and you can pass an evaluation and still lose the account within a week.

This post breaks down what Topstep’s own rules pages say about each one, not what a random forum thread claims. We checked every source below directly on help.topstep.com and topstep.com on September 5, 2026.

> **Key Takeaways**
> • TopstepX’s Maximum Loss Limit (MLL) recalculates at the end of each trading day but is monitored in real time intraday, so a wick through the floor closes the account even if you’d have finished the day green.
> • The MLL only moves up, never down, and locks permanently once your balance reaches your starting account size (or locks at $0 on Express Funded Accounts).
> • Topstep pays a 90/10 split on profits after your first $10,000, which is paid out at 100% for traders on the current dashboard.
> • Payout requests during the Combine-to-funded stage are capped by account size ($2,000-$6,000 depending on tier and path); Live Funded Account payouts carry no cap.
> • [automated trading](https://pickmytrade.io "PickMyTrade - Automated Trading") and bots are explicitly allowed on TopstepX, but Topstep’s Terms of Use ban placing orders from a VPS, VPN, or remote server: “your server can watch and record, but it cannot trade.”

## How Does TopstepX’s Trailing Drawdown Actually Work? {#how-does-topstepxs-trailing-drawdown-actually-work}

The Maximum Loss Limit is the rule that ends more Combines than the profit target does, and it’s also the most misunderstood. Topstep’s help center describes it as a hybrid: the floor itself only moves at the end of the trading day, but your account is watched continuously while the session is open.

Topstep’s own explainer puts it plainly: the MLL “updates at the end of each trading day but is monitored in real time throughout the session,” and it “rises as your end-of-day balance grows, but never moves down. Once it reaches your starting balance, it locks permanently.” Both realized and unrealized P&L count against it during the day, which is why a single bad intraday spike can close an account that would have closed the day in profit.

Here’s what that looks like on a 50K Trading Combine, using the example Topstep publishes: you start with a $50,000 balance and a $48,000 MLL. Gain $500 on day one and your balance moves to $50,500, dragging the MLL up to $48,500. Lose $500 back on day two, your balance returns to $50,000, but the MLL stays at $48,500. It does not fall back with you. That one-way ratchet is the entire mechanic, and it’s why traders talk about “giving back” gains as the real killer, not the losing trades themselves.

Account-level numbers follow a consistent pattern across the Combine sizes:

| Account Size | Profit Target | Max Loss Limit | Daily Loss Limit |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| $50K | $3,000 | $2,000 | $1,000 |
| $100K | $6,000 | $3,000 | $2,000 |
| $150K | $9,000 | $4,500 | $3,000 |

Hitting the Daily Loss Limit isn’t a violation. Topstep’s Live Funded Account rules state that hitting it “will suspend Trader’s ability to trade for the remainder of the then current trading session,” and positions close automatically until the next session opens. It’s a pause, not a strike. The MLL breach is the one that ends the account.

The lock mechanic changes slightly once you move past the Combine. On Express Funded Accounts, the MLL starts as a negative figure relative to the account’s starting size and locks at $0 permanently once your balance climbs enough to clear it. Either way, the direction is the same: the floor only ever moves toward the trader’s favor, and once it locks, giving back profit stops threatening the account, though it can still threaten your payout eligibility if it drags you below a winning-day threshold.

> **Citation capsule:** Topstep’s Maximum Loss Limit “updates at the end of each trading day but is monitored in real time throughout the session” and “locks permanently” once it reaches the starting balance, per help.topstep.com’s official MLL explainer (checked September 5, 2026). Live Funded Account daily-loss mechanics are confirmed on topstep.com/live-funded-account-rules, last updated July 1, 2026.

## What Are TopstepX’s Payout Split, Schedule, and Caps? {#what-are-topstepxs-payout-split-schedule-and-caps}

Once an account is funded, the question shifts from “will it survive” to “how fast can money actually leave it.” Topstep’s payout policy, published on its help center, lays out a 90/10 profit split, with one wrinkle that matters for newer accounts.

The split is straightforward on paper: Topstep keeps 10%, the trader keeps 90%. But traders on the current dashboard get their “first $10,000 in lifetime profits” at 100%, before the 90/10 split kicks in on everything after. The minimum payout request is $125, and payouts process during CME market hours, Sunday 5 PM CT through Friday 5 PM CT, excluding holidays.

Eligibility depends on which path you’re on. The Standard path to a first payout on an Express Funded Account needs five winning days of $150 or more, with no minimum profit requirement attached to that first request. The Consistency path needs three trading days with at least one trade each, and the account has to stay at or below a 40% consistency target the whole time.

Caps are where a lot of traders get surprised. As of an April 28, 2026 policy update, each Express Funded Account payout is capped at 50% of account balance, up to a dollar ceiling that depends on account size and path: $2,000, $3,000, or $5,000 on the Standard path for the 50K/100K/150K tiers, or $3,000, $4,000, and $6,000 on the Consistency path. Live Funded Account payouts carry no per-request cap at all, and daily payout requests open up after 30 winning days on an LFA.

| Stage | First Payout Requirement | Per-Request Cap |
| --- | --- | --- |
| XFA, Standard | 5 winning days of $150+ | $2K / $3K / $5K by size |
| XFA, Consistency | 3 trading days, ≤40% consistency | $3K / $4K / $6K by size |
| Live Funded Account | 5 winning days of $150+ | None |

One detail that surprises automation users specifically: if you’re running copy trading on TopstepX, Topstep’s payout policy states that “your copy-trading connection is automatically disabled while a Payout processes,” and you have to manually re-enable it once the balance updates. Set a calendar reminder, because a forgotten re-enable is a common reason accounts sit idle for days after a payout clears.

> **Citation capsule:** Payout split, minimum request, eligibility paths, and the April 28, 2026 cap update are documented on help.topstep.com’s official Payout Policy article, checked September 5, 2026. The copy-trading auto-disable during payout processing is stated directly on the same page.

## Does TopstepX Allow Automated Trading, Bots, and Copy Trading? {#does-topstepx-allow-automated-trading-bots-and-copy-trading}

This is the part most rule roundups skip, and it’s the one that matters most if you’re routing [TradingView alerts](https://pickmytrade.io "PickMyTrade - Automate TradingView") into a funded account. The short answer: yes, automation is allowed, but with real limits worth reading closely before you connect anything.

Topstep’s dedicated TopstepX API Access article confirms traders can “build and run automated trading strategies,” “connect third-party tools and platforms,” and “execute trades directly through your TopstepX account” using the API. There’s no blanket ban on bots, Expert Advisors, or scripted execution.

The restriction that trips people up is where that automation is allowed to run. Topstep’s Terms of Use, as summarized in the same API access article, are explicit: “All trading activity must originate from your personal device. The use of VPS, VPNs, and remote servers is prohibited.” The document draws a specific line for anything hosted off your own machine: read-only activity like historical data storage, backtesting, logging, and dashboards is fine on a private server, but “placing, modifying, or cancelling orders” and “any automated trigger that can reach the order endpoints” are not. As Topstep puts it, “your server can watch and record, but it cannot trade.”

Separately, Topstep’s Prohibited Trading Strategies article bans using “software, AI, ultra-high speed systems, or mass data entry that manipulates, abuses, or provides an unfair advantage,” which is aimed squarely at high-frequency and latency-arbitrage tactics rather than ordinary rules-based automation. Topstep also states plainly that it won’t support third-party tools: “Topstep and ProjectX don’t affiliate with, endorse, or support any external vendor or platform,” and there’s no technical support for coding or API implementation issues.

> None of this makes automation off-limits. It means the responsibility for how and where your orders originate sits with you, not with whichever tool sends them. A rule violation is treated the same whether a human clicked the button or a script did, so “the bot did it” isn’t a defense Topstep’s risk team accepts. If you’re evaluating any TradingView-to-TopstepX bridge, the personal-device clause is worth asking about directly rather than assuming a vendor has already solved it for you, and it’s worth asking specifically how order transmission is architected, not just where the dashboard is hosted.

> **Citation capsule:** TopstepX API Access rules (“your server can watch and record, but it cannot trade”) and Prohibited Trading Strategies restrictions on HFT-style automation are both published on help.topstep.com, checked September 5, 2026. Both articles confirm bots and third-party tools are permitted subject to these limits.

## How Should TradingView Automation Fit Into TopstepX’s Rules? {#how-should-tradingview-automation-fit-into-topstepxs-rules}

TopstepX is one of the funded futures programs listed on [pickmytrade.io/supported-propfirms](https://pickmytrade.io/supported-propfirms), where PickMyTrade lists Topstep at a 4.8 rating with the account’s standard terms (6% profit target, 4% max drawdown on the reference tier) alongside its two connection modes: PMT Automation, which executes TradingView webhook alerts directly, and PMT Copier, which mirrors trades across accounts. If you’re setting up either one, the drawdown and API rules above should shape your risk settings before you shape your strategy.

Practically, that means sizing position limits in your automation config to respect the account’s actual MLL and DLL, not a rounded guess, and confirming your execution setup doesn’t run afoul of the personal-device clause covered above. It also means remembering to re-enable copy trading after every payout clears, since that’s a manual step Topstep doesn’t automate for you.

For the technical side of connecting a TopstepX account, generating an API key, and wiring it into an automation dashboard, PickMyTrade’s separate setup documentation walks through the [ProjectX/TopstepX connection process](https://docs.pickmytrade.io/docs/connect-projectx-to-topstep-api/) step by step. This post is about the rules governing the account itself; that guide covers the how-to of getting connected. For background on how TopstepX’s newer rule structure compares to the older Classic Topstep model, see PickMyTrade’s [TopstepX vs Classic Topstep breakdown](https://blog.pickmytrade.io/topstepx-vs-topstep-classic-better-2025/), and for a broader look at ProjectX-based automation across firms, see the [ProjectX setup guide](https://blog.pickmytrade.io/projectx-setup-guide-2025-automation-checklist/).

## Frequently Asked Questions {#frequently-asked-questions}

### What happens if I hit TopstepX’s Maximum Loss Limit? {#what-happens-if-i-hit-topstepxs-maximum-loss-limit}

The account closes. Topstep monitors both realized and unrealized P&L in real time during the session, so touching the MLL at any point, even briefly on an open position, triggers closure immediately rather than waiting for end of day.

### Does the trailing drawdown ever stop moving? {#does-the-trailing-drawdown-ever-stop-moving}

Yes. It only moves up as your end-of-day balance grows and never moves back down when you lose. Once it reaches your starting account balance, it locks permanently and stops trailing altogether.

### How much does TopstepX take from my payouts? {#how-much-does-topstepx-take-from-my-payouts}

Topstep keeps 10% under the standard 90/10 split. Traders on the current dashboard get their first $10,000 in lifetime profits at 100%, with the 90/10 split applying to everything earned after that.

### Can I run an EA or trading bot on TopstepX? {#can-i-run-an-ea-or-trading-bot-on-topstepx}

Yes. Topstep’s own API access documentation confirms automated strategies and third-party tools are allowed, subject to the standard rulebook and a ban on high-frequency, latency-arbitrage-style strategies.

### Does TopstepX allow VPS or cloud-hosted automation? {#does-topstepx-allow-vps-or-cloud-hosted-automation}

Not for placing orders. Topstep’s Terms of Use require trading activity to originate from your personal device and explicitly prohibit VPS, VPN, and remote servers from reaching order endpoints. Read-only functions like data logging and backtesting on a private server are fine.

### Is copy trading allowed on TopstepX accounts? {#is-copy-trading-allowed-on-topstepx-accounts}

Yes, through TopstepX’s built-in copy trading settings or third-party tools using the API. One operational detail to know: Topstep automatically disables your copy-trading connection while a payout is processing, and you have to manually turn it back on afterward.
