# Rithmic Access Denied: API Access Level Error Fix

A Rithmic access denied error on an automation platform almost never means your password is wrong. It means your Rithmic user ID can log in but isn’t cleared to send orders through the API.

R|Trader Pro checks the first permission. An automation bridge needs the second, and only the firm that issued your credentials can switch it on.

So the same username can work in R|Trader Pro at 9:25 and fail in PickMyTrade at 9:26. Rithmic stacks four separate permissions on one user ID, and each fails with its own message. This guide maps every message to its gate, to the person who can open it, and to the exact question to ask them.

> **Key Takeaways**
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
> - A green R|Trader Pro login proves only the first of four gates. API access, account authorization and risk state are separate switches.
> - Free Rithmic trial IDs can’t use the R Protocol API at all. PickMyTrade’s own setup guide, updated September 4, 2026, says so.
> - `1011 permission denied` and `USER HAS NO PERMISSION TO THIS ACCOUNT` both get fixed by your FCM or prop firm, not in your settings.

## What does Rithmic access denied actually mean? {#what-does-rithmic-access-denied-actually-mean}

Rithmic access denied means one of the 4 permission gates on your user ID is shut, and none of them is the password. **Rithmic** is the order-routing and market-data network behind many US futures prop firms and retail futures brokers. Your FCM or prop firm issues each Rithmic user ID and decides what that ID may do.

Think of the ID as a key card: logging in to R|Trader Pro is one door, and sending orders from third-party software through Rithmic’s **R Protocol API**, the websocket interface automation platforms connect to, is a different door. The firm can open the first and leave the second locked.

Each gate has its own owner. The error text tells you which one to call.
*Each gate has its own owner. The error text tells you which one to call.*

The error you see tells you which gate you’re stuck at, so here’s the full map before we go through the gates one by one.

| What you see | Which gate | Who fixes it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Status stays Disconnected | Login | You: check password and System Name |
| Error received 1011 (internal error) permission denied | API entitlement | Your FCM or prop firm |
| Rithmic Response: Connection Closed - Permission Denied | API entitlement, after a drop | Reconnect once, then the firm |
| Green connection, zero accounts listed | Account authorization | The firm, or you if it’s the wrong user ID |
| Green, but alerts fail with USER HAS NO PERMISSION TO THIS ACCOUNT | Account authorization | Your FCM or prop firm |
| Green, and orders reject after a loss | Risk state | The firm’s risk desk |
| Automation drops when you log in somewhere else | Session limit | Your broker, or close one session |
| Tradovate’s Access is denied JSON | Not Rithmic at all | Your Tradovate setup |

Notice how little of that table you can fix from your own screen? Oddly, that’s the useful part. Once you know which gate is shut, stop editing alert settings and email the one person who can open it.

## Is your user ID a free trial? {#is-your-user-id-a-free-trial}

Check this first, because nothing else can fix it. PickMyTrade’s [Rithmic setup guide](https://docs.pickmytrade.io/docs/pickmytrade-rithmic-setup/), updated September 4, 2026, states that the R Protocol API doesn’t support temporary free demo or trial accounts, and Rithmic gives the same answer for its paper trading demos. A trial ID fails every time, however carefully you type it.

That makes it the one Rithmic access denied cause no setting can touch. The confusing part is the word “demo”. Rithmic’s free trial runs 14 days and needs no card, while a paid paper trading user ID from a broker or prop firm is a different product, even though people call both “demo”.

PickMyTrade’s [TradingView to Rithmic page](https://pickmytrade.io/broker/tradingview-to-rithmic/) says you can connect a “live or demo” account, meaning paid paper trading.

The app’s System Name list includes `Rithmic Paper Trading` beside the live systems. So a free trial ID can pick a system that looks right and still get refused. The refusal comes from the ID type, not from the dropdown.

How do you tell which one you hold? One clue: Rithmic’s free trial uses the email you signed up with as the user ID. For a definite answer, ask whoever gave you the credentials: “Is this a trial ID, or a paid live or paper ID?” Get the reply in writing.

A paid paper ID is also where to rehearse, and the [testing guide for automated strategies](https://blog.pickmytrade.io/paper-trading-automated-strategy-test-before-going-live/) shows what to check.

## What does error 1011 permission denied mean? {#what-does-error-1011-permission-denied-mean}

It means Rithmic’s server closed the API session and gave “permission denied” as the reason. The R Protocol API runs over a websocket, and **1011** is the standard websocket close code a server sends when it can’t fulfill a request. In logs from Python-based bridges, the word “received” in `Error received 1011 (internal error) permission denied` tells you the close came from Rithmic’s side, not yours.

The words in brackets come from the websocket library reporting the close, not from Rithmic. Python’s widely used websockets package labeled 1011 “unexpected error” up to version 10 and “internal error” from version 11.

We found this in the library’s source, and it explains why traders paste two versions of one line. Some even read it back as 1101. It’s all one refusal.

One lookalike isn’t a permission problem at all. `sent 1011 (internal error) keepalive ping timeout` means the client stopped hearing Rithmic’s heartbeat and closed the session itself. That’s a network or load issue. If it lines up with Rithmic’s daily maintenance, about 5:20 to 5:45 PM ET on weekdays, wait it out.

### What causes a genuine permission denied? {#what-causes-a-genuine-permission-denied}

Check the known causes in this order, because the first one ends the search.

- The user ID is a free trial, so no setting will fix it.
- The ID’s agreements aren’t signed. Rithmic makes every user accept its mandatory agreements and the market data self-certification in R|Trader Pro, and an API login is refused until you do.
- API access for third-party apps is switched off, so only the issuing firm can switch it on.
- The System Name doesn’t match the one on your R|Trader Pro login screen.

The second cause is the one people skip. In PickMyTrade support tickets we’ve seen traders place manual trades in R|Trader Pro minutes before the API refused them, so the password was never the issue. If this ID has never logged in to R|Trader Pro, log in once, accept every agreement, then retry.

The reconnect variant, `Rithmic Response: Connection Closed - Permission Denied`, deserves one retry, since a real blip clears on the second attempt. What if the same line comes straight back? Then something changed on the firm’s side: an evaluation expired, a password was reset, or the account moved to a restricted state overnight.

## Who switches API access on, and what does it cost? {#who-switches-api-access-on-and-what-does-it-cost}

The firm that issued the user ID, every time. Retail accounts get it from the FCM or clearing broker, and evaluations from the prop firm. Either way, that firm decides whether third-party API connections are allowed, and two of the four brokers we checked charge $100 a month for them.

The price of that switch varies sixfold. We analyzed the published Rithmic rate cards of four futures brokers and one prop firm in September 2026.

Two brokers add a $100 monthly API fee on top of the $25 user ID fee. Two others list a single low fee with no separate API line.

 Two brokers add a 100 dollar monthly API fee to a 25 dollar user ID fee, and two list one fee of 20 or 25 dollars with no separate API line.

*The same Rithmic network, a sixfold spread in what the API switch costs.*

A “no separate API fee listed” line isn’t a promise of zero. Ask your firm directly, and ask whether the fee is billed per user ID, because a second ID doubles it. Bulenox shows the prop firm version of the same charge, a $100 monthly add-on for third-party API connections, though PickMyTrade doesn’t support Bulenox accounts.

When you contact the firm, ask these four questions, because each maps onto a gate and gets a yes or no:

- Is API access for third-party applications enabled on this Rithmic user ID?
- Is each account under it authorized for automated order placement?
- Is any risk restriction currently blocking order entry on these accounts?
- Is there a monthly API fee?

## Why does a green connection still say USER HAS NO PERMISSION TO THIS ACCOUNT? {#why-does-a-green-connection-still-say-user-has-no-permission-to-this-account}

Because green proves only one thing: the session logged in, and it says nothing about whether a given account may take orders. `USER HAS NO PERMISSION TO THIS ACCOUNT` means Rithmic accepted the login, then refused order entry on 1 specific account number. In PickMyTrade support tickets, it sits in the Alert Log beside a healthy-looking status.

**Account authorization** is the per-account permission that lets a user ID place orders on a given account number. One user ID can hold several accounts. The firm can clear some for API orders and not others, so one evaluation account fills while its twin refuses alerts.

Take the string to the firm exactly as written, in capitals. Ask them to authorize that account for automated order placement through the API. Also ask whether a risk rule has locked it or set it to liquidate only.

### When Connected Accounts is empty {#when-connected-accounts-is-empty}

A close cousin: the connection turns green, but the account list is empty, so there’s nothing to route an alert to. PickMyTrade can only route to the accounts Rithmic returns for that session. An empty list usually means the accounts sit under a different user ID, or the firm hasn’t exposed them to API sessions yet.

Confirm which user ID owns the account numbers you expect. Then delete the connection and create it again, so the list is pulled fresh rather than cached from the first attempt.

## Does the System Name have to match exactly? {#does-the-system-name-have-to-match-exactly}

Yes, character for character. The **System Name** is the Rithmic environment your firm assigned: one of 28 values, such as `Apex` or `Rithmic 01`. You don’t choose it: the right value is whatever you select on the R|Trader Pro login screen for that same user ID.

We analyzed the app’s Rithmic form on September 28, 2026; it asks for Rithmic Username, Rithmic Password and System Name. The app trims stray spaces from the username and password, so a pasted space isn’t your problem. A wrong System Name still is.

That list holds prop firm systems like `Apex`, `Tradeify`, `LucidTrading`, `TopstepTrader` and `Earn2Trade`, plus `Rithmic 01`, `Rithmic 04 Colo`, `Rithmic Paper Trading` and `Rithmic Test`. Bulenox isn’t on it, and several names look alike, so don’t pick the closest-looking entry.

Which one did your firm assign? Read it off the R|Trader Pro screen rather than from memory. If the value from your R|Trader Pro screen is missing, tell support which one your firm assigned.

## Why does opening R|Trader Pro knock the automation offline? {#why-does-opening-rtrader-pro-knock-the-automation-offline}

Because two normal logins on one Rithmic user ID fight over one session, and Rithmic drops the first. One broker caps each user ID at 5 order sessions but just 1 market data session. If PickMyTrade connected first, it’s the one that drops.

![A trader in a white shirt holds a tablet chart while four monitors show price charts on a white desk.](https://images.pexels.com/photos/5831260/pexels-photo-5831260.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&w=1200&fm=webp)

Rithmic’s fix for desktop traders is Plug-in Mode. You tick Allow Plugins on the R|Trader Pro login screen and keep it running, and other platforms share that session.

The catch is that a plug-in app must run on the same machine as R|Trader Pro. A cloud bridge doesn’t run on your PC, so Plug-in Mode can’t carry it.

So what are your options? Keep R|Trader Pro closed while the automation trades and watch fills on the firm’s web or mobile platform. Or ask the firm for a second user ID, which may add a second API fee.

### When the tab shows expired or a View Plan button {#when-the-tab-shows-expired-or-a-view-plan-button}

This one looks like a permission error but is billing. Each PickMyTrade subscription attaches to one broker connection slot, and the app names a first paid Rithmic connection RITHMIC1 and a second one RITHMIC2.

If your plan is mapped to a different slot from the one you’re connecting, the tab shows expired. Reassign the subscription to the right slot, or tell support which slot you’re using. Plan prices are on the [pricing page](https://pickmytrade.io/pricing/).

## Why “Access is denied” usually points to Tradovate {#why-access-is-denied-usually-points-to-tradovate}

Search “Rithmic access denied” and you may be holding a string Rithmic doesn’t send. That string, `{"failureReason":"UnknownReason","failureText":"Access is denied"}`, is a JSON response from Tradovate’s API. Rithmic words its refusals as permission denied, as a 1011 close, or as `USER HAS NO PERMISSION TO THIS ACCOUNT`.

The mix-up is easy to make, because firms like Apex and Tradeify sell the same evaluation on either platform. If your firm gave you a Tradovate login, the gates above don’t apply.

Tradovate connections run on PickMyTrade’s separate .trade site, which keeps its own Tradovate order rejection guide. For the broader list of Rithmic and Tradovate rejections, including AutoLiq and market-data entitlements, see the [Rithmic error messages guide](https://blog.pickmytrade.io/rithmic-error-messages-autoliq-access-denied-entitlement/).

## Does your prop firm allow API orders at all? {#does-your-prop-firm-allow-api-orders-at-all}

A working API entitlement answers “can this ID send orders?” It doesn’t answer “may you automate this account?” At least 2 well-known futures firms, Apex and Topstep, issue working credentials while restricting automation on some or all of their accounts.

Apex Trader Funding is the stricter example. Its User Agreement prohibits placing orders through automated systems, then lists a few narrow permitted exceptions. Read the current agreement yourself before you connect anything to an Apex account, because a rule breach costs more than a connection error.

Bulenox is a different kind of block. Bulenox runs on Rithmic, but PickMyTrade’s Rithmic setup guide states that Bulenox accounts aren’t supported through the Rithmic connection. Bulenox doesn’t appear in the app’s System Name list either, so no dropdown choice will work.

TopstepX accounts don’t use the Rithmic connection. They connect through PickMyTrade’s ProjectX integration, which has its own error set, covered in the [ProjectX error codes guide](https://blog.pickmytrade.io/projectx-error-codes-by-endpoint-what-each-number-means/). Topstep’s Live Funded Account rules, updated September 17, 2026, say its API gateway isn’t available on Live.

Firm rules change often. The [prop firm automation rules checklist](https://blog.pickmytrade.io/5-prop-firm-automation-rules-before-you-run-a-bot-2026/) collects the questions worth asking before you run a bot on any funded account.

## How to clear Rithmic access denied, one check at a time {#how-to-clear-rithmic-access-denied-one-check-at-a-time}

Eleven checks, run in order, tell you which of the 4 gates is shut and who owns it. Stop at the first failure, because every check after it depends on it. The first two need nothing but the R|Trader Pro web login and the same credentials.

Each line below maps to one gate from the chart above.

- Log in at the R|Trader Pro web login with the same username, password and System Name. If that fails, fix the credentials first.
- Accept every agreement and the market data self-certification that R|Trader Pro shows you.
- Write down the System Name exactly as that login screen shows it.
- Ask the issuing firm, in writing, whether the user ID is a trial ID or a paid one.
- Ask whether API access for third-party applications is enabled on that user ID.
- Ask whether each account number is authorized for automated order placement.
- Close R|Trader Pro and every other app using the same user ID, including charting platforms and trade copiers, then reconnect.
- Check that Connected Accounts lists every account number you expect.
- Check that your plan is attached to the connection slot you’re using.
- Once it’s green, send one small test alert, set up as in the [Rithmic alert automation guide](https://docs.pickmytrade.io/docs/automate-tradingview-alerts-rithmic/).
- Copy the full error string.

## What to send support if it still fails {#what-to-send-support-if-it-still-fails}

If all 11 checks pass and the connection still refuses, a useful ticket carries 5 things. Send the error string exactly as shown, the System Name you picked, and a screenshot proving the same credentials log in at R|Trader Pro web. Add whether the user ID is trial or paid, and what your firm said about API access.

That last item decides where the fix lives. If the firm says API access is on and the account is authorized, the problem is on the connection side, and [PickMyTrade support](https://pickmytrade.io/page/contact/) can trace it. If the firm hasn’t answered yet, wait for them first.

Redact before you send anything. Blank out account numbers, order IDs, tokens and webhook URLs in every screenshot. A webhook URL works like a password: anyone holding it can fire orders into your automation.

> **Ready to test the connection?** Once your firm confirms API access is on, [connect your Rithmic account to PickMyTrade](https://pickmytrade.io/broker/tradingview-to-rithmic/) and prove it on a paid paper user ID before you point it at a funded account. The 7-day trial needs no card.

## Frequently asked questions {#frequently-asked-questions}

**Why does my Rithmic login work in R Trader Pro but fail in an automation platform?**

R Trader Pro checks only the first of four gates: that your username, password and System Name are valid. Sending orders from third-party software needs a second permission, API access, switched on for that user ID by the FCM or prop firm that issued it. A login can pass all day while API access stays off.

**Who enables API access on a Rithmic account?**

The firm that issued the Rithmic user ID. For a retail account that’s your FCM or clearing broker, and for an evaluation or funded account it’s the prop firm. No automation platform can switch it on, so email the firm about API access and fees of up to $100 a month.

**Can I use a free Rithmic trial account to test TradingView automation?**

No. PickMyTrade’s Rithmic setup guide, updated September 4, 2026, states that the R Protocol API doesn’t support temporary free demo or trial accounts. A paid paper trading user ID from a broker or prop firm is a different product, and that’s the right way to test before going live.

**My connection is green but every alert says USER HAS NO PERMISSION TO THIS ACCOUNT. What now?**

Green means the session logged in. That message means Rithmic accepted the login, then refused order entry on one specific account number. Ask your prop firm or FCM to authorize that account for automated orders and confirm no risk rule has locked it.

**What does Rithmic error 1011 permission denied mean?**

It means Rithmic’s server closed the API session with websocket close code 1011 and the reason “permission denied”. It rarely points to a typo. Check four things in order: the ID isn’t a free trial, its agreements are signed in R Trader Pro, API access is on, and the System Name matches.

**Does opening R Trader Pro knock my automation offline?**

It can. A second normal login on the same Rithmic user ID disconnects the first, and an automation connection is usually that first login. Plug-in Mode only covers apps on the same machine, so close R Trader Pro or ask for a second user ID.

## Fix the gate, not the settings {#fix-the-gate-not-the-settings}

Every Rithmic permission error on this page traces to a switch that someone else controls. That’s frustrating for about five minutes, and then it’s a relief. You stop rebuilding alerts that were never broken, and you send one email with the exact string and the exact question.

Start with the flow chart. If you get past it and still see a refusal, the [Rithmic connection errors guide](https://blog.pickmytrade.io/rithmic-connection-errors-complete-troubleshooting-guide/) covers login failures, No Handle and market data faults. For first-time setup, the [TradingView to Rithmic automation walkthrough](https://blog.pickmytrade.io/rithmic-automation-connect-tradingview-to-rithmic-in-2026/) goes from credentials to the first alert.
