# How to Test TradingView Automation Safely Before Going Live

Before connecting a live brokerage account, test the entire TradingView → PickMyTrade → broker workflow in a supported paper or demo environment. PickMyTrade.io supports several broker integrations, and testing options differ by broker. A successful simulated trade confirms your setup, not your future live fills.

Use this guide to verify webhook delivery, JSON configuration, symbol mapping, order size, exits and broker execution. Then review the limitations of simulation before switching to real money.

For PickMyTrade.io, choose the test environment offered by your specific broker. Rithmic connections may use the Rithmic Paper Trading system; Interactive Brokers offers paper accounts; other integrations may expose Demo or environment selection. Verify your current broker setup in the [PickMyTrade.io documentation](https://docs.pickmytrade.io/). Do not send test alerts to a live account merely because you intend them as tests.

## Choose a Supported Demo or Paper Account First {#choose-a-supported-demo-or-paper-account-first}

## Every Testing Method and What It Proves {#every-testing-method-and-what-it-proves}

## Method 1: Prove the Payload Arrives Before You Let It Place Anything {#method-1-prove-the-payload-arrives-before-you-let-it-place-anything}

**Problem:** You want to know your alert JSON is correct without an order going anywhere, and PickMyTrade has no dry-run switch.

**Fix:** Use the two logs you have. On the TradingView side, open the Alerts panel and switch to the Log tab, where the webhook status column tells you whether TradingView delivered the POST and what came back. On the PickMyTrade side, the alert log records every payload that arrives with a Status column carrying the result, so a malformed payload or an unmapped symbol lands there as an error instead of a trade.

For a delivery-only test, inspect TradingView’s alert log and PickMyTrade’s alert log before connecting any live broker account. A disconnected broker can prevent execution, but do not treat this as a guaranteed dry-run mode. For an end-to-end test, connect a supported demo or paper account and verify the order there.

## Method 2: Drop to a 1-Minute Chart So the Alert Fires While You Are Watching {#method-2-drop-to-a-1-minute-chart-so-the-alert-fires-while-you-are-watching}

**Problem:** Your real condition might not trigger for six hours, and you are not going to sit there waiting.

**Fix:** Copy the strategy onto a 1-minute chart and point the test alert at a condition that trades often. Support gives this answer because the plumbing ignores what timeframe produced the alert. Set the alert to fire once per bar rather than on bar close if you want it sooner, then set it back before you go live. Keep the quantity at one micro contract even in demo, and remember this is the alert people most often forget to delete afterwards.

## Method 5: A Prop Firm Evaluation Is a Testing Ground, and It Is Still Rule-Bound {#method-5-a-prop-firm-evaluation-is-a-testing-ground-and-it-is-still-rule-bound}

**Problem:** An evaluation feels like free testing because the money is not yours yet. It is not free, and the rules bind from the first order.

**Fix:** Treat it as a real account with a hard stop attached. Topstep’s own Trading Combine parameters page (updated 24 June 2026) answers the automation question with _“Yes, with conditions”_, adds that _“Topstep won’t help set up or troubleshoot automated strategies, and no exceptions are made for errant trades or malfunctions”_, then says plainly: _“Test on your Practice Account first.”_

An evaluation carries a daily loss limit and a trailing drawdown, and a bot that misfires forty times in a minute breaches both before you reach the keyboard. Two further Topstep conditions: ProjectX API automation is prohibited in the Live Funded Account (Live Funded Account parameters, updated 11 August 2026), and all trading activity must originate from your personal device, with VPS, VPNs and remote servers prohibited (TopstepX API Access, updated 23 June 2026). Confirm with Topstep how that applies to any tool you use.

On Apex Trader Funding, one thing only: Apex Trader Funding’s User Agreement prohibits placing orders with bots, scripts, or automated systems. Check Apex’s current agreement before automating anything on an Apex account. Rules vary by firm and change often, so confirm your firm’s policy before automating. The firm-by-firm rundown is in [prop firms that allow automated trading](https://blog.pickmytrade.io/prop-firms-that-allow-automated-trading/).

## Method 6: One Micro Contract on a Live Account, the Last Rehearsal {#method-6-one-micro-contract-on-a-live-account-the-last-rehearsal}

**Problem:** Everything passed in demo, and you still do not know how the order behaves against a real exchange.

**Fix:** Send one micro contract, live, in a liquid session, while you are watching, then reconcile it against the broker’s own order history rather than the automation log. What this surfaces that demo never did: real slippage on the entry, whether your stop rests where you think it does, margin rejections, permission errors, and what your broker’s risk layer says when it declines something.

It says nothing about size. A one-lot fills instantly and tells you nothing about a ten-lot in the same book. Scale in steps, and set your Tradovate risk settings before the first live alert.

## Which Brokers Offer a Connectable Demo Environment {#which-brokers-offer-a-connectable-demo-environment}

This varies by broker, with no general rule, and [which brokers connect to TradingView](https://blog.pickmytrade.io/brokers-that-connect-to-tradingview/) covers the wider capability question. Tradovate lives on pickmytrade.trade and the other brokers on pickmytrade.io, 10+ integrations in total. Verified against the live connection forms on 25 August 2026:

One number matters on the Interactive Brokers row. Unsubscribed market data in an IB paper account is delayed, and per [Interactive Brokers’ paper trader delayed data page](https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/trading/papertrader-delayed-data.php), US futures run 10 minutes behind. Your alert can be correct and the fill still lands somewhere that makes no sense on the chart.

## Why Demo Fills and Live Fills Will Never Match {#why-demo-fills-and-live-fills-will-never-match}

**Problem:** A clean week in demo reads like proof. It is evidence about your configuration, not your fills.

**Fix:** Know which numbers to discount. A simulator matches against a simulated queue, so limit orders fill more generously than they would with real orders ahead of you, and slippage comes out understated. Rejections are the bigger gap: margin problems, position limits, entitlement errors and prop risk rules live on the specific account, so a demo account with different rules never produces them.

Demo and live fills can differ because of market liquidity, queue position, broker risk controls, slippage, data subscriptions and network delays. Always compare the broker’s execution history rather than relying on an automation status alone.

## Your Pre-Live Checklist {#your-pre-live-checklist}

1. Confirm that your broker connection is using the intended demo, paper, or live environment before enabling alerts.
2. Broker connection green, and the account ID in the alert is the account you actually mean.
3. Continuous symbol such as `MNQ1!` with Override Mapping unticked, so rollover is handled for you.
4. One alert sent, one matching row in the alert log, Status readable and not an error.
5. Quantity is what you intend, and stop loss and take profit land where you expect.
6. Trading time window covers the hours you trade, with no narrow test window left behind.
7. Every test alert deleted in TradingView _and_ removed from the PickMyTrade alert configuration.
8. If and when you decide to trade live, begin with the smallest permitted size and monitor the first order closely; real money remains at risk.

## Still Not Behaving? What to Send Support {#still-not-behaving-what-to-send-support}

If an alert reaches PickMyTrade and still produces no order in demo, send four things: the exact Status text from the alert log row, the timestamp with your timezone, the symbol as it appears in the alert, and whether the connection was Demo or Live. If nothing reaches the alert log at all, export the TradingView alert log instead.

Redact first. Account numbers, order IDs, the token inside your webhook URL and any balance figure all get blanked out. The error string itself is the part support needs.

## Frequently Asked Questions {#frequently-asked-questions}

**Can I test PickMyTrade.io without real money?**

Yes, when your connected broker supports a compatible demo or paper environment. Confirm the exact connection mode for your broker before sending alerts.

**Does TradingView Paper Trading test webhook execution?**

No. TradingView Paper Trading can help evaluate strategy behavior inside TradingView, but it does not by itself verify the external webhook-to-broker route.

**Which demo brokers can I use?**

Options described in this guide include Rithmic Paper Trading, Interactive Brokers paper accounts, and demo environments for certain other integrations. Availability depends on the broker and current PickMyTrade connection options.

**Will simulated fills match live fills?**

Not necessarily. Live execution can differ in slippage, queue priority, order rejections, liquidity, and account-specific restrictions.

**What should I check before going live?**

Confirm the intended broker account, symbol mapping, order quantity, stop-loss and take-profit behavior, alert frequency, logs, and that all temporary test alerts are disabled.
